Case Study: Lewis Djemal - From Trainee to Partner in 8 Years

“I never thought when I joined Clifton Ingram as a trainee that I would be a Partner 8 years later. It has been hard work but I have been supported throughout my legal career at Clifton Ingram and given opportunities if I wanted them”.

Early Days lewis djemal

I undertook some work experience with Clifton Ingram whilst I was still at school and it confirmed to me that law was the career I wanted to go into. After finishing my legal studies at Guildford College of Law I joined Clifton Ingram as a trainee in 2011.

Cutting your Teeth

Unlike some of my friends who did their training at large national law firms, I never felt like a ‘small cog in a big machine’. At Clifton Ingram, I was given plenty of responsibility at an early stage and the opportunity to interact with clients.

Clifton Ingram went out of their way to accommodate my preferences regarding which seats I wanted to train in. Throughout my training I was encouraged to see matters progress from start to finish, contributing along the way.

The level of support was fantastic and my supervisors, as well as department heads, were always available to help. I knew when my training contract was coming to an end that I wanted to stay at Clifton Ingram and be part of a firm with a strong local history but also the ability to adapt and grow in the market.

Climbing the Ladder

Once I qualified I was given opportunities to play a key role in supporting and developing work for existing clients. The firm has always been open to my ideas and encouraged me to use my own initiative to develop strong relationships with other property professionals across the Thames Valley. As a result, I was able to develop my own client base and business network.

I now act for large national clients as well as local ones in the Thames Valley, on a wide range of commercial property matters. I love the variety and now being a Partner and joint Head of the Department, the chance to have a real impact and drive the business forward.

Clifton Ingram is a friendly firm where all staff are encouraged to get involved and progress their career if they want to put the effort in. Now I am I Partner I hope I can do the same for my team and give them the same support and ability to progress their career as I was.

Case Study: Jo Reader, Conveyancing Legal Assistant - Reputation and Responsibility

“One of the things that I love about working at Clifton Ingram is the trust that has been given to me and the encouragement to do more. I am never bored in my role because if I want to take on more responsibility, I am encouraged to do so rather than held back”.

Early Days jo reader

I knew from an early age that I wanted to work as a secretary/assistant in the legal sector and so I took the necessary steps to enable me to do so. I studied a secretarial course initially then undertook a part-time legal secretary course which I believe assisted me when obtaining my first job as a trainee legal secretary. I learnt the rest “on the job” from experienced legal secretaries.

Being local, I knew of Clifton Ingram’s reputation as being a long-established and good firm to work for and was delighted when a job became available in the department I wanted to work in (conveyancing). I was offered the job and have now been working here for nearly 10 years.

Cutting your Teeth

Since working at Clifton Ingram, I have been encouraged to undertake any relevant training. Clifton Ingram are very supportive employers and have always assisted me when I have asked to take on more responsibility.

Climbing the Ladder

I work very closely with clients and am a well-established member of the department I work in. I am a trusted employee and am always encouraged to take new opportunities where possible. We have recently taken on a new computer system and I was asked to be on the committee for it. Since the new computer system has been introduced, I have become a “super user” which means I assist in the day-to-day training of the system and helping others with using it.
